Yesterday, on April 28, 2025, Raúl Medina Caballero, Director General of Eurocontrol, and Enrique Fraile Riesco, Chief of Staff at Eurocontrol, made an official visit to Iceland. The occasion marks Iceland’s formal accession to Eurocontrol in January this year, granting the country the right to participate in decision-making and policy development in European aviation.
During the visit, the Eurocontrol representatives met with key institutions involved in air navigation and aviation safety in Iceland. Meetings were held with senior representatives from the Icelandic Transport Authority, the Ministry of Infrastructure, Isavia ANS, the Icelandic Coast Guard, and Keflavík Airport.
At the headquarters of Isavia ANS, they received a brief introduction to the company’s operations and toured the Area Control Centre in Reykjavík as well as the training department.
Iceland is responsible for one of the largest airspace regions in the world, the Reykjavík Control Area (Reykjavík CTA), which spans approximately 5.4 million square kilometers and connects air traffic between Europe and North America.
The visit from Eurocontrol highlights Iceland’s importance in international cooperation on air navigation and strengthens ties between Iceland and key European partners. Isavia ANS, a subsidiary of Isavia, plays a vital role in ensuring safe and efficient air navigation over the North Atlantic.
At Isavia ANS, we are proud to take an active role within Eurocontrol and look forward to continued collaboration with our European partners toward a strong, efficient, and sustainable future in the skies.
