Installation of EGNOS V3 ground stations at Keflavík Airport and Hleinargarður

The European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS) V2 is Europe's regional satellite-based augmentation system (SBAS) that is used to improve the performance of global navigation satellite systems (GNSSs), such as GPS and Galileo.EGNOS V2 consists of 40 ground stations located throughout Europe, North Africa and America, but two of these ground stations are located in Iceland, in the Airtraffic Control Center and at Egilsstaður Airport. Isavia ANS handles the operation of the EGNOS V2 ground stations in Iceland. The EGNOS system is currently being fully upgraded, where a new system, EGNOS V3 will replace EGNOS V2 by the end of 2026. The EGNOS operator decided to install new V3 EGNOS ground stations at Keflavík Airport (see figure 1) and at Hleinargarður (see figure 2), which is near Egilsstaðir. The CNS department together with the Electrical Engineering Department have taken care of the project management and installation of systems and equipment for the EGNOS V3 ground stations. An EGNOS V3 station is equipped with a redundant heating, ventilation and air conditioning system (HVAC), monitoring system, access system, back-up power (UPS and back-up generator), line-network system and fire extinguishing system, in addition, piping and foundations for the EGNOS antennas must be provided.

New EGNOS V3 ground stations are being installed at Keflavík Airport and Hleinargarður (close to Egilsstaðir), which will replace the EGNOS V2 ground stations that are in operation at Isavia in the Airtraffic Control Center and at Egilsstaðir Airport.
